Holiday Waste – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – and Remember, it’s your Earth too

It’s Christmas day, the presents are opened, toys are assembled and you’re surrounded by mounds of colorful, crumpled wrapping paper. The next step – cleaning up Christmas aftermath. This typically begins by smashing wrapping paper, cards and boxes into as many trash bags needed to see your floor again. Those stuffed bags of paper are then thrown out with trash and end up in the landfill. All that wrapping paper you just cleaned up is just that – paper – it all can and should be recycled. Why not start a new tradition and continue the giving by RECYCLING or REUSING that mound of wrapping paper, cardboard toy and gift boxes, Christmas cards and envelopes?

Remember – if it rips, it’s paper and can be put in the recycling bin. If it glitters, shines or can’t be ripped it might contain metal strands or it might be metallic paper which cannot be recycled.
Most  ribbons and bows cannot be recycled because they aren’t paper products, so reuse these for next year.

Reuse or place the following in your recycling bin, not the landfill:
  • wrapping paper
  • cardboard wrapping paper rolls
  • gift tissue paper
  • gift boxes and tags
  • calendars (remove metal wire if attached)
  • cards and envelopes
  • catalogs
  • anything that has the recycling symbol with number 1, 2 or 5
Here are a few ideas for reusing these items:
  • Shred the colored wrapping paper to use as colorful and protective packaging around future gifts.
  • Use shredded wrapping paper to protect your Christmas decorations before storing them for the next holiday season
  • Use large pieces of wrapping paper to cover a shoe box and create a storage container.
  • Like newspaper, wrapping paper is great for cleaning windows and leaving them streak-free – use it instead of paper towels or a cloth. (Avoid using the shiny/plastic stuff though.)

According to recycleworks.org, from Thanksgiving to New Years Day, household waste increases by more than 25%. Added food waste, shopping bags, packaging, wrapping paper, bows and ribbons all adds up to an additional 1 million tons a week to our landfills. In the U.S., annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags totals 4 million tons. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high! If we each sent one less card, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper. In addition, if every family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet. (recycleworks.org)
It’s a small effort for a big reward. Please take advantage of our city’s recycling program – it makes a difference! Let’s see if we can all also increase our recycling efforts after Christmas too.  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – and Remember, it’s your Earth too.
Happy Holidays!

Congratulations! Dublin Fire Department Receives Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Grant.

After learning of Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation grant program for up to $20,000 to fire departments located within 30 miles of a Firehouse Sub, Chief Ballard took action. He submitted an application and letter explaining why and how this grant could assist our local fire department in protecting you.

Mr. Morgan Collins, owner of Firehouse Subs in Dublin and other locations also submitted a letter of recommendation describing his relationship with the Dublin Fire Department. This week, Chief Ballard received the excellent news: Dublin Fire Department received the grant which will provide 10 sets of bunker gear and helmets valued at over $18,000!

Way to go Chief Ballard, the Dublin Fire Department and Mr. Morgan Collins! We appreciate your hard work, determination and support.

In 2005, Firehouse Subs established its non-profit, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, with the goal to provide funding, life-saving equipment, disaster assistance and educational opportunities for first-responders.

Our local heroes need to be prepared at a moment’s notice to protect and save lives. Many first responders are forced to make do with older equipment and have limited or no access to needed resources. Our goal is to ensure that we are able to impact local fire departments, law enforcement and EMS with the tools, technology and training they need.

Our heroes deserve our support and you can help make a difference. http://Firehousesubs.com/Make-Donation

The Blue Roll Cart – What’s it really for?

In 2010, The City of Dublin launched its voluntary curbside residential recycling program in an effort to keep our community Green and Growing. Large blue carts and simple guidelines specifying acceptable and non-acceptable materials were provided to every single family household in the city limits. Single-Stream recycling has provided ease to recycling, allowing residents to mix all recyclable items into one container – no sorting necessary. The city’s collection capacity doubled overnight! Dublin residents were ready to make a positive impact on the environment and limit the use and growth our landfills. Over 700 TONS of recyclable materials have been diverted from our landfill due to the recycling efforts of the City of Dublin’s residents!

Recycling, however, is not only good for our environment; it’s good for our economy. Partnering with SP Recycling and the Laurens County Solid Waste Management Authority, the city’s single stream recycling efforts provides SP Newsprint with valuable raw material: newspaper and cardboard. Every piece of newspaper and cardboard you throw into your blue cart goes directly to the SPRecycling in Forest Park , Georgia, to be processed and returned to SPNewsprint in Dublin, Georgia to be reused. Recycling this material plays a vital role as SP Newsprint’s Dublin mill relies on recycled paper and cardboard to feed their production facility.

According to the Laurens County Solid Waste Management Authority, the single stream recycling of the City of Dublin, along with the recycling efforts of the cities of Rentz and Dudley, have added 5 – 6 years of use to our county landfill in the last four years! The Laurens County Solid Waste Management Authority are now hauling three 43ft. tractor tailors filled with recyclable material EVERY WEEK!

Did you know 70% of your trash can be recycled? This provides great benefits to the environment and the local economy. So think “Green” before you throw away!
